For release 2007-11-01 Sorenson Legacy Foundation, Rosecrest Announce $5 Million Donation to Support Creation of Southwest Salt Lake County Recreation Center Sorenson Charitable Foundation and Rosecrest, Inc. Each Contribute $2.5 Million to Enhance Quality of Life for Residents along Salt Lake County's Southwest Bench SALT LAKE CITY, UT (November 1, 2007) — The Sorenson Legacy Foundation, a non-profit charitable giving arm of the Sorenson family, and Rosecrest, Inc., an innovative master-planned community on the desirable Salt Lake County southwest bench, today announced that the two organizations will combine to contribute $5 million to assist in the creation of a quality recreation and fitness facility that will serve the residents of Herriman, Bluffdale, Riverton and surrounding areas. "It is a privilege for us to contribute to the creation of this quality new recreation center," said Donald E. Wallace, president and COO of The Sorenson Group of Real Estate Companies. "This facility will provide much-anticipated and much-needed recreational, social and cultural opportunities for the residents of the southwest sector of Salt Lake Valley." The southwest region of Salt Lake Valley is the area's fastest-growing sector — it is anticipated that its population will double from approximately 65,000 to more than 130,000. Nevertheless, community recreational facilities have not kept pace with this growth or with the evolving needs of these growing communities' residents. To address this lack of community facilities, Salt Lake County, in partnership with the cities of Bluffdale, Herriman and Riverton, has developed plans for the design and construction of a major multi-purpose family-oriented community center. Under the direction of Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon and the Salt Lake County Council, $20 million was appropriated for the recreation center through the Zoo, Arts and Parks (ZAP) Tax and other county sources. "Though significant funding has been set aside through the ZAP appropriation, the funds are not sufficient to enable us to build a facility adequate to the needs of our communities and their citizens," said Mayor Lynn Crane of Herriman. "We are extremely grateful for the generous support of the Sorenson Legacy Foundation and Rosecrest, which will enable us to build a high-quality facility with exceptional amenities. Rosecrest is already a crown jewel of the southwest bench; this commitment expands the Sorensons' already-great contribution to our region." "It is a productive and rewarding experience to work with business and civic leaders to address the needs of the rapidly-growing southwest Salt Lake County region through this planned recreation center," added Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon. "This is a great example of public/private collaboration that truly works." The financial contribution from the Sorenson Legacy Foundation and Rosecrest will help ensure that the new recreation center will be a fully-equipped, amenity-rich facility. Facilities for the new center include:
James Lee Sorenson, a trustee of the Sorenson Legacy Foundation, acknowledged the efforts and commitment of the region's public servants for driving the project forward — particularly Mayor Crane, Mayor Corroon and Herriman Councilmember Raquel Deluca: "We are extremely impressed by the vision and dedication of Councilmember Deluca and Mayors Crane and Corroon. Their refusal to accept anything but the best for their constituents is a primary reason this project is coming together so well. We are honored to collaborate with such excellent public servants to help enhance the experiences and quality of life for residents along the southwest bench."
